Day 300-Wednesday’s Medical Minute-7 Benefits of Grapefruit Essential Oil

Alright, only 65 days to go before my year of daily blogging is up! You guys sick of me yet? lol! I have to say, it’s been fun, but it will be nice to take step back and have a little breather for a while. Maybe go to three days a week or something. ūüôā

Today I thought I’d get into a discussion about my latest favorite essential oil: grapefruit

It has so many uses and benefits and smells so wonderful, I can’t believe it’s taken so long for me to write about it. I have actually been using it for a while, it was in a blend that I used to use to maintain my weight (one of the many benefits), but now I use it alone or combined with lemon in my water every day.

If you have been hiding under a rock for the last few years, you may be unaware that grapefruit is one of the best foods to eat for weight loss and burning fat. Many folks jus don’t like grapefruit because it is bitter, or they can’t eat it because it reacts with their medications. Well, grapefruit essential oil is the answer! Of course, you should check with your doctor if you take certain medications for depression¬†or blood pressure but it is considered safe.

Whether you choose to use it internally like me (only 100% organic ctpg brands please) or in a massage oil concoction, you will do your body a favor by adding this to your routine. Some studies show that even inhaling the aroma of this potent essential oil can naturally lower your blood pressure and help you relax! If using internally, only use the recommended amount (usually one drop per 16oz glass of liquid) because overconsumption can lead to gallstones and cause spasms. Also, if using topically, be sure to mix it with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut or jojoba oil if you have sensitive skin.

Some of grapefruit oil’s benefits are:

  • Disinfecting surfaces
  • Cleansing your body
  • Reducing depression
  • Stimulating your immune system
  • Decreasing fluid retention
  • Curbing sugar cravings
  • Aiding in weight loss

Grapefruit oil contains many antioxidants and phytochemicals which reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.  Limonene, which makes up between 88-95% of the oil is a tumor-fighting, cancer preventative phytochemical that protects cells from damage. It is just one of its several antioxidants including vitamin C, myrcene, terpinene, pinene, and citronellol.

Some of the many uses of grapefruit essential oil are as follows:

Natural Antibacterial-Because of its antimicrobial effects, grapefruit oil can kill bacteria internally or on the skin, prevent the growth of mold and fight strong bacterial strains responsible for food-born illnesses like salmonella and E-coli.

Air Freshener-Getting rid of odors can be accomplished by diffusing a blend of grapefruit, lemon, and orange essential oils, which clean and deodorize the air.

Weight Loss Booster-Some of grapefruit oil’s active ingredients are beneficial to boost metabolism, reduce hunger cravings and appetite. This makes it a great tool for losing weight in a fast and healthy way. Diffused around the home or office, it can help curb those cravings when they strike. If you can, add a drop to your water and sip throughout the day or rub a drop on your wrist to drive hunger pangs away. Direct Inhalation of the oil can kick sugar cravings as well.¬†

Digestive Booster-Grapefruit oil can help detox the liver and kidneys, help with fluid retention and fight gut bacteria. Combined with lemon essential oil, it can help flush toxins out of your system and may even help cure a hangover by stimulating the gallbladder and liver.

Helps Clean Hair, Fight Acne and Save Skin-Not only is grapefruit a great cellulite fighter, its antibacterial properties make it great for cleansing skin, and strengthening immunity against pollutants. It can help heal wounds, cuts, bits and prevent skin infections. Adding a few drops to your shampoo can reduce grease and sweat while adding volume and shine.

So you see, it is a very versatile oil and I’m only using it for half of it’s benefits myself! I like the fresh citrusy taste it gives beverages and when added to the diffuser, it makes the whole room smell fresh and clean. Now, I am not a certified aromatherapist, and you should always check with your healthcare provider before trying anything new. I learned what I know through my own research and trusted sources like Dr Axe, Dr Mercola and Roxy over at The Oily Guru. I don’t get anything to talk about them, nor am I currently affilitated with any particular brand. Maybe that will change in the future, but for now I use a brand that I can get locally that is ctpg (certified theraputic pure grade) ¬†and it has been working fine for me.

Give grapefruit essential oil a try and let me know what you think. If you have a question or comment, leave it below and I’ll try to address it to the best of my ability. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you tomorrow, on the patio.

Day 299-MET-Why I Decided To Become A Writer

The summer after my mom passed away, we were on vacation in Crystal Beach, Tx. and as I lounged on the sun deck catching up on emails and such, ¬†I came across one of those ads for “Become a barefoot writer.” I have to admit, I was intrigued and maybe part of me was looking for something different to do with my life. When you experience loss, you sometimes need something to fill that hole, for me that was writing. At first, after reading that article and several others, it was all about how to make money as a writer. All the content I was reading had to do with becoming a copywriter and how I could make a good living as a writer, from anywhere in the world, as long as I had a computer and an internet connection, in my pajamas if I wanted! Well, who doesn’t want that dream? Anyway, since then my focus has changed and while I’d still like to make money, I realized that I can’t do that without providing a service to others at the same time. You have to give your readers something of value. Something they want or need. Help them solve a problem, fix what’s broken or offer some product or service designed to assist them some way.

Thing is, somewhere¬†along the way I discovered that I love to write. Also, that I’m addicted to learning. I take more classes and read more material than I get words written. I’m struggling with my blog and website, but I keep trying and keep writing content and someday, maybe I’ll figure out how it all comes together. I’ve taken classes on copywriting, essay writing, marketing, social media, blogging and affiliate marketing. You would think that by now, something would have clicked and I would have it all put together and working like a well-oiled machine. Not. But I will get there if I keep my focus true and never give up on my dream. So far, I’ve written one article that paid me some money. Maybe I need to get back to that, write some how-to articles or step-by-step tutorials and submit them to some publications that pay. That way, I get compensated for providing something people may want or need.

But the other dream is creative writing and I can’t seem to get away from that. I want to someday write a book. I mean the kind with a plot and characters and a beginning, middle and end. That’s why my blog is such a confusing mess right now¬†because I can’t make up my mind exactly what kind of writer I want to be…still. I’ve been at it almost three years now, playing around on other publications like Medium¬†and Prose because I think I can do it all and really, I can’t. Or I shouldn’t. I should pick one thing and run with it, I just have to do some soul searching and decide which one resonates with me the most. Follow your heart they say. But what if my heart wants it all? I’m like a spoiled brat or petulant child, I want it all and I want it now!¬†Well, I will make this promise to you, I will figure it out. If I keep writing and studying, someday it will all click and I will devise a way to write what you need to read, ¬†you will either learn something, get the¬†advice you need, be entertained, or be helped in some other way and maybe I will earn a little something. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Then again, maybe I will finally write a novel and it will become a best seller…talk about a dream!

I still need your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback. You have to tell me what you want and/or need. Do you want me to keep the blog going just as it is, or do you want to see some changes? Do you like articles, recipes, tutorials or reviews? What subjects do you want me to write about? Writing, alternative health, Paleo/Whole30 or something completely different? ¬†These are the things I need from you, then I will be able to better design my blog to help you. Thanks for reading and following along, have a good day and I’ll be waiting for your responses on the patio.
